Freya in her own words:

Hi, I’m Freya! I’m a Brussels born climate activist. I joined Climate Justice for Rosa to help campaign for awareness of the brutal reality of the current climate crisis. I have always been acutely aware of the climate crisis, it’s a cause I have always felt strongly about. The urgency of the situation always seemed apparent to me. But I realised that it is not as apparent to others, a dismal fact that became all too obvious when I was participating in the early stages of the Climate Justice for Rosa campaign.

Rosa was my friend. We were born 3 days apart, we lived 3 blocks apart, and when we’d had an argument, we’d sit 3 seats apart on the school bus home. Rosa was cool. Incredibly cool. She was audacious and outrageous, never afraid to speak her mind. She had incredible determination to achieve her goals. She had awesome style and incredible music taste (although we always disagreed about the beatles. She liked them, I don’t.) . Above all, she was kindhearted and had a great laugh. Being around her made you feel special. I always felt like I was hanging with the cool kids when she was around, even if it was just us two.

She was also incredibly capable of standing up for herself, and for the things she believed in. She was an advocate for Black Lives Matter, a staunch defender of women’s rights, and would confidently refute anyone who disagreed with her about the basic fundamentals of the dignity every human deserves.

But she couldn’t stand up to the climate crisis on her own. Climate change, its unpredictability and terrible consequences, took her from us. And it’s for that reason that Climate Justice for Rosa exists. It's the reason why every year we remember her. We have a moment for her at her tree, light candles, and we grieve. But we also march, protest, and campaign. We demand that our governments do more to tackle the ongoing climate crisis, by stepping in and holding not only themselves directly accountable, but the corporations they do business with as well. Our marches and events in Brussels speak directly to the Belgian Government, and the EU institutions. We make sure they don’t forget Rosa, because we never will. Their inaction and failure to address the true state of the climate emergency must be presented to them, with the fervour of our organisation behind it to make sure they know we will hold them accountable. For anyone who denies the reality of the situation crashing down around us, we can’t let them pretend it’s not happening any longer.

I know Rosa would have stood up for us. So we have to stand up for her.

Join us, and help make Rosa’s voice heard.
